How to Create Pages as Content for your Wordpress Website

Another way to write content for your Wordpress website or blog is by creating Pages.

There are some standard pages that you should always create to make your site appear professional, but you can also create as many pages you like for whatever reason you like.

Pages like About, Contact Us, Privacy, Website Terms are typical for what you need to create as a minimum set of pages for any website.

In fact you could create your whole site out of just pages and then it would be just like a traditional website build in HTML with a fixed structure and with no categorization or dating of content.

What is a Wordpress Page?

Wordpress Pages are different than posts in that they cannot have Tags or Categories added to them and often they can be nested by belonging to a parent page.

One similarity is that a user can leave Comments on your pages just like on your posts.

Pages are what you normally would see in MENU bars on Wordpress sites, where they will often appear by default or linked to from the header, footer or a sidebar.

They will not appear in any list of recent posts and can be ordered to give a relative location in a menu.

How to Create a new Wordpress Page

The process for creating pages in Wordpress is very similar to that for writing posts except for the differences in the funtionality of what you can do with a page as mentioned above. The screen layout is very similar and the wysiwyg Page Editor is exactly the same as the Post Editor.

In fact I recommend that you read Wrting a Wordpress Post first, as this will give you a good introduction to writing pages and it covers some of the items in more detail than I will here.

As always you will first have to log on into your Wordpress admin area by going to yourdomain.com/wp-admin in your browser.

You will then need to click on the Write A Page button on the left or click on WRITE and then PAGE in the top left corner.

This will then cause the “Write Page” page to be displayed as shown above.

Enter a Short Title!

If your new Page is going to be part of a Menu Bar (either across the page or down the sife of the page) on your site then you will want to make the title short so that it does not take up too much room and leaves space for other menu item pages to be added as well!

If the page is not for a menu bar then the title can obviously be longer but it may need to fit wherever you want to place it depending on how you intend to use the page.

Enter Your Content in the Page Editor

The Page editor is like a little word processor that allows you to enter the text for your page and customize and style it to get the look and feel that you want for the page. Use the icons at the top of the editor to do this and to create different text effects.

Remember not to cut and paste your text form another word processor like MS Word as it can create problems with your pages when Wordpress displays them due to hidden codes that can be taken across to Wordpress.

Save and Preview Your new Page as you work!

When you are done writing your content just click on Previw This Page to view your page as it will look when you publish to your website.

Set the Page Order and Parent Page if required

As previously mentioned there are no tags or categories for Wordpress pages, but you may wish to change the Page Order or assign the page a Parent so that the new page displays in the correct position in a menu bar instead of being ordered alphabetically…

Publish Your Page!

Finally after entering all your content and previewing your page you can now publish it by clicking on the PUBLISH button on the right. This will make your new page live on your website for all to see.

You have now successfully published a new Wordpress Page!

  1. Thanks for the post. My CMS editor does not look like the one on your screen. Why is that?

    My first line is
    B i link b-quote del… etc

Your CMS editor is user friendly. Is this a plug-in that I need to download?

Thanks for your excellent graphic that “actually showed” what you were trying to explain.

    1. No plugin needed for the CMS as it is a standard part of Wordpress. Not sure what problem you have – would need to see it for sure before helping. Others may find their looks different too but that would be because they are probably using a later version of the Wordpress software, probably version 3.0, as the layout changed completely with version 2.7.
