With Wordpress version 2.8 it has become a very easy process to install a new Theme directly from your own computer, instead of using FTP software to upload the theme first.
Now there is no longer a manual process involved and you can both install and activate a new Wordpress theme automatically from right inside your administrator’s area using options and links in the Dashboard.
Note that the process described below assumes that you have already downloaded the theme you want to install into a folder (or your windows desktop) on your computer.
Also the Theme folder must be compressed (in .zip format) and contain the theme files required for Wordpress.
It is probably true to say that any theme you download will already be in this format.
To start the new theme installation just login to your admin area in Wordpress and go to Themes under the Appearance option in the menu sidebar.
Then click on the option “ADD NEW THEMES” and the Install Themes page will be displayed.

Click on the UPLOAD link and the “Install A Theme In .zip Format” option will be display as below:

Then click on the BROWSE button so that you can browes the folders and files on your computer.
If you are using Windows then you will see a FILE UPLOAD window open similar to that shown below:

This window will allow you to browse to anywhere on you computer and select you theme .zip folder from wherever you like.
When you find it them just click on it to select it and then on the OPEN button to return to your Wordpress admin area.
In the above example I have selected the Flexibility2 theme to install in Wordpress.

When you get returned to Wordpress the theme folder you selected will be displayed in the browse box and to start the installation process you just need to click on the INSTALL NOW button…
You will then see the following messages displayed as Wordpress automatically unpacks the .zip folder and then installs the theme for you. It will also tell you when it has completed this installation process.

At this point the them has not been activated and you have the choice of doing the activation immediately, previewing the theme to check that it is what you expected or to just return to the themes page where all the available themes for your Wordpress site will be shown.
In order to activate the theme you have just uploaded and installed and make it the current theme for your site you just need to click on the ACTIVATE link above.
Wordpress will then automatically activate the them for you and when it has completed doing this you will be shown the Manage Themes page so that you can see that the theme you have justs uploaded and activated has now become the current them for your Wordpress website or blog.

And that’s it done!
Another time-saving process from Wordpress to make managing your site a much easier task.
