Once your site is at version 2.7 of Wordpresss, you can upgrade to the latest version automatically from within the Admin Dashboard area.

This is very easy to do and means that you will never again have to upgrade Wordpress manually unless you really want to.
To upgrade Wordpress automatically to a new version just login to your admin user and you will then see the Dashboard page displayed.
If a newer more recent version of Wordpress has been released and is available, you will see a message at the top of the dashboard page telling you so…

Also if you look in the RIGHT NOW pane on the Dashboard page you will be a able to see the current version of Wordpress that you are using (2.8 in image below) and there will also be a button displayed that allows you to upgrade to the latest version (eg Update to 2.8.2).

Note that you are only allowed to upgrade automatically to the LATEST Version of Wordpress. If you want to upgrade to a newer version that is not the latest then you will have to use the manual upgrade procedures to do this.
NOTE: It is essentail that you backup your Wordpress database before you do any ugrade!
To start the automatic process to update Wordpress you can simply click on the UPDATE button or use the “Please Update Now” link at the top of the page. They both work in exactly the same way. You will then see the UPGRADE WORDPRESS page displayed:

If you wish to upgrade manually you can download the new version software from this page by clicking on the DOWNLOAD button.
For the automatic upgrade just click in the UPGRADE AUTOMATICALLY button to start the update to the latest version of Wordpress.
Wordpress will then upgrade itself and you will see the following displayed as it goes through the update process:

Finally you will see the message “Wordpress Upgraded Successfully“.
And that’s it – you are done!
How easy was that?
At last a simple and quick way to upgrade Wordpress to the latest version.

if I do an automated update of wordpress from 2.91 to 2.9.2 should I deactivate all my plugins prior to automatically updating? This is my first time doing an update so wasn’t sure.
Thanks!
Yep – definitely always decativate your plugins BEFORE upgrading. Then just re-activate them all again and see if you have any issue with your site. If you do then deactivate them all again and recativate one by one to see which one is giving you problems – mosts issues with upgrades are usually because of plugins which stop working or which start to give errors – good luck!
thanks!
